Fire leaves several Kitty residents homeless

Fire Saturday night destroyed a two-flat wooden house on William Street, Kitty, Georgetown, leaving 10 persons homeless.

One of the occupants, Ronell Griffith, told Demerara Waves Online News that he was relaxing with his children upstairs when he saw smoke going through the floor ofd the house located at 79 William Street, between Alexander and Pere Streets.

Griffith said he immediately grabbed his children, exited the house and forced entry into the apartment where the fire started. “By the time we kicked the door open, everybody start running to throw water,” he said.He said fire fighters were summoned but were dogged by limited water supply.

A brother, sister and her companion, who lived in the apartment where the fire started, were not at home at the time the fire started.  Two adults and three children lived in the other apartment.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle told Demerara Waves that two fire fighters were ripped by barbed wire on a fence while dousing the flames.

He said fire fighters were affected by low water pressure including not working fire hydrants. Gentle said they were forced to pump water from a trench at Vlissengen Road. A number of the hoses on David Street were punctured by passing vehicles.
