The human spirit needs freedom to effectively serve”- Africo Selman tells former party

Last Updated on Wednesday, 19 August 2015, 2:16 by GxMedia

Africo Selman

Expecting to be heckled for her seemly “wrong” decision to abandon the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) then in opposition, for  the People Progressive Party (PPP) to again end up in opposition, Africo Selman made it absolutely clear Tuesday August 18, that she has the right to associate with the party of choice.

Selman, a former People’s National Congress (PNC) member, opened her budget speech defending her switch in parties.  Just before the 2015 elections, Selman moved over to the PPP claiming that she was being stifled and harassed at the PNC which is the largest party in the now APNU+AFC collation government.

She yelled to the government side of the House where some members heckled that she left the opposition to return to the opposition, “that it is my right.”  She said to anyone in the House and outside, “I have the right to decide which party I choose to associate and serve… and serve I will… I choose the PPP/C.”

She went on to say that humans need to be free to be effective. “The human spirit needs freedom to effectively serve and that is what I am doing here,” she lashed at her hecklers, while receiving loud cheers from her party.
