Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), the country’s national water utility, and the United Nations in Guyana have launched a programme supported by seed funding from UN-Water, UN-Water said in a statement on Wednesday.
The UN agency says this prigramme will strengthen national action on water and sanitation and accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 6.
Guyana was selected by UN-Water through a competitive process following a joint application by GWI and the UN Country Team. GWI will serve as the main national technical partner during implementation.
In practical terms, the initiative will bring together national and UN expertise, evidence and partners to improve coordination around Guyana’s water priorities, develop practical solutions and identify opportunities for longer-term support and investment. It will also help strengthen equitable access to sanitation and sustainable water management, including in remote communities.
The work is intended to support stronger water security and help communities respond to challenges including changing rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, El Niño-related impacts and sea-level rise.
GWI and participating UN entities will also contribute technical expertise, staff time, data and communications support, with the aim of laying the groundwork for further technical assistance, joint programmes and partnerships
