The Head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), Deputy Police Commissioner Fazal Karimbaksh has been accused of sexual offenses by a female member of that law enforcement agency, top police officers said Tuesday.
Mr Karimbaksh remains on duty, and worst case scenario, he can be sent on leave at this time because the Police Service Commission (PSC) has not been reconstituted.
The police force has not issued a statement on the matter concerning the financial crimes czar, but two officers with knowledge of the matter confirmed to Demerara Waves Online News on strict condition of anonymity that a complaint haa been received and he would be questioned.
“All criminal investigative procedures will be adopted during the investigative process including putting the allegation to the officer in question,” one of the sources said.
Details of the allegations could not be independently confirmed.
Under Guyana’s Sexual Offences Act, the maximum penalty for rape is life imprisonment on conviction by a High Court.
