APNU hopeful joint statement with WIN will be issued today

Almost one week after meeting with the main opposition We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) to address representation on two constitutional commissions, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Friday said the long-awaited joint statement should be issued later in the day.

“We are back and forth in trying to finalise that statement. I am optimistic that by close of business today, one should be out,” Mr Sherwin Benjamin, General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) — the largest APNU partner — briefly told a news conference.

APNU and PNCR leader Aubrey Norton remarked that “there are exchanges between the two on the issue.”

WIN General Secretary Odessa Primus on Wednesday said she was inclined to believe that they would be able to deal with the statement on Thursday.

She believed that WIN and APNU were “very” close to agreeing to a common text of the statement.

“I would hope that we would be able to finalise things tomorrow (Thursday),” she had said then.

Mr Norton last week publicly chided Mr Mohamed for acting in bad faith by requesting the names of nominees for the Local Government Commission (LGC) but went ahead and submitted the names of two WIN persons and one from the Forward Guyana Movement.

In response, APNU is demanding proportional parliamentary representation on the LGC, and several regional and local councils, from its 12 seats.

WIN then invited APNU to a meeting and added issues such as the need to replace the three APNU-aligned commissioners on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) based on it being the main opposition party, the appointment of WIN election scrutineers and the appointment of a regional chairman and vice chairman of Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice).
