Storm wreaks havoc in Arau

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC)  was Wednesday evening conducting a multi-sectorial response following reports of high winds that affected the community of Arau, Region Seven, causing damage to several residential structures.

Based on preliminary information provided by the Village Toshao, 15 houses have been reported as damaged, with the impacts primarily affecting roofs and other sections of residential structures.

“These figures remain preliminary and are subject to verification as assessments continue. An ongoing damage assessment is currently being conducted to determine the full extent of the impact on households and community infrastructure,” the CDC said in a statement.

As an immediate measure, the CDC says it will mobilise an initial quantity of emergency shelter materials to assist households whose homes have been affected.

Additional relief supplies and support may be provided based on the findings of the ongoing assessment. The Commission says it is also prepared to establish emergency shelter arrangements should the need arise. The Commission  says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as verified information becomes available.

The assessment and response are being coordinated by the CDC with support from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Police Force (GPF), Regional Democratic Council (RDC), and Arau Village leaders.

The CDC says the GDF has mobilised personnel and resources to support the response, while local and regional officials continue to provide information from the affected community.

The coordinated assessment will assist the CDC in determining priority needs and any additional resources required to support affected residents, that government disaster response agency said.
