Flood warning issued as more rain expected for three days

Guyana’s Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Tuesday night warned Guyanese to brace themselves for potentially “significant flooding” due to heavy rainfall expected from April 1 to 3.

“The Civil Defence Commission urges all members of the public to take the necessary precautions during periods of rainfall and flooding,” the disaster mitigation and response agency said.

The CDC called on the public to remain alert and continue to monitor official updates and advisories.

The public can also report any instances of flooding, rising water levels, or related impacts to the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) by phone +592-226-1027 or via WhatsApp at +592-600-7500.

Experts are advising Guyanese to avoid flood-prone areas whenever possible, and exercise extreme caution when driving or walking during rainfall, especially in areas affected by pooling water.

The CDC urged persons to keep drains, trenches, and waterways clear to reduce the risk of flooding, and also to secure important documents, household items, and other valuables.

Weather forecasters predict that cloudy to overcast conditions with frequent showers and thundershowers are expected in regions 1–5, 7, 9, and southern Region 6, with rainfall between 20–50 mm.

Other areas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered showers and lighter rainfall of 10–20 mm, the CDC added.

The commission listed several expected impacts including coastal flooding, drainage overflow and road inundation, agricultural flooding that can put crops and livestock at risk, riverine flooding and possible community isolation, mining and hinterland access disruptions, and transportation delays on airstrips and trails.

The CDC says soils may already be saturated due to continuous and heavy rainfall. As a result, any additional rainfall may increase the risk and severity of flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Hilly and elevated communities may also experience mudslides during periods of intense rainfall.

Further, the commission says areas affected by thundershowers may experience strong winds and lightning strikes.

Members of the public are urged to remain alert and exercise caution to protect life and property.
