A 16-year-old boy was among four persons arrested for allegedly stealing GY$7 million from a Chinese businesswoman while she was supervising the offloading of a nearby shipping container, police said.
The Guyana Police Force said the alleged larceny occurred on Wednesday, March 25 about 5:30 p.m. at D’urban Backlands, Georgetown.
Investigators were told that the 35-year-old businesswoman had placed a black plastic bag containing cash on the front passenger seat of her motor bus, which was left unlocked while she supervised the offloading of a nearby container.
During that time, a 16-year-old labourer of D’urban Backlands allegedly entered the vehicle and removed the bag containing the money.
Police said CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage obtained from the area reportedly showed the suspect entering the vehicle and later exiting with a bulky black plastic bag.
Police said they subsequently conducted searches in D’urban Backlands, during which GY$4,390,000 was recovered and lodged.
Four persons were arrested and escorted to the nearby East La Penitence Police Station.
The other three suspects were a 46-year-old female vendor, a 40-year-old female kitchen assistant, and a 38-year-old male labourer.
