GCAA probing aircraft accident at Port Kaituma airstrip

Last Updated on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, 23:03 by Writer

The damaged plane wing.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has launched an investigation into an accident involving two planes belonging to the same domestic airline at the Port Kaituma Airstrip, Director-General of the regulatory body, Retired Lt. Col. Egbert Field said.

Mr Field said one or both pilots could be grounded, as investigators continue their work.

Sources in the aviation industry told Demerara Waves Online News that as a Trans Guyana Airways plane was departing, its wing tipped the wing of another plane that was parked.

The sources said part of the problem is that the parking space at the Port Kaituma Airstrip is too small, posing serious challenges for three aircraft to be accommodated at the same time.

The source called for the aerodrome there to be expanded.
