The construction of a second offshore pipeline in Guyana, this time to move natural gas to Berbice, would depend on the feasibility of several mega infrastructure projects, ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge said on Thursday.
“In order to to be comfortable that we move forward we have to know that there’s a market for the gas that will pay for the gas at a price that can sustain that kind of investment,” he told a news conference.
He said ExxonMobil and the Guyana government had already received expressions of interest for several “anchor projects” such as another power plant, data centres and a bauxite-to-alumina processing plant to utilise the gas from the south-eastern end of the Stabroek Block.
Mr Routledge said there had been very preliminary talks with Suriname about sharing a pipeline to achieve economies of scale.
He said the Haimara development would be used as the anchor but Pluma would be part of that development.
He added that the remaining gas discoveries that are not swept up in the Longtail development would be associated with a Haimara anchor development.
He said Pluma has gas condensate but is considered drier that Longtail’s.
In light of those features, he said ExxonMobil preferred to develop other reservoirs before a tie-back to Pluma in order to maximise recovery of the condensate.
Meanwhile, he said Hammerhead contains heavier oil and the associated gas from that deposit—about 80 to 90 millions standard cubic feet at peak—would not be reinjected into the reservoir but would be added to the existing gas pipeline to carry supply to Wales, West Bank Demerara.
The Guyana government earlier this year said the Wales power plant would be partly completed by year-end.
A natural gas liquids plant to produce cooking gas is also part of the Wales development project worth US$759 million.
The actual cost for all development works, including soil stabilisation, is approaching US$3 billion.
