A Brickdam Secondary School teacher has been sent on administrative leave, paving the way for an investigation into allegations of a sexual nature, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain said on Wednesday.
“In accordance with established standard operating procedures, the accused teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave,” he said.
He said the teacher was sent off the job on Friday, 13 March, the same day that the allegations were brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education.
The Chief Education Officer said the students were being interviewed by the non-governmental child rights organisation, Blossom Inc. “Each affected student is to undergo a forensic interview to be conducted by Blossom Inc. To date, one such interview has been completed,” Mr Hussain said.
He also said the Welfare Department of the Georgetown Department of Education met with the first parent on Friday, 13 March, a second parent on Monday, 16 March, and a third parent on Tuesday, 17 March.
Mr Hussain said each parent was issued a referral letter to the Child Protection Agency, consistent with standard operating procedures.
Mr Hussain denied that there has been a delay in the probe. “The Ministry of Education wishes to state unequivocally that, contrary to certain misleading claims circulating on social media, there has been no delay in the investigative process,” he said.
