A 37-year-old man has been freed of a rape charge dating back to 2023, his lawyer Jermaine Jervis said on Tuesday.
Desmond George of Charity Housing Scheme, Pomeroon, Essequibo Coast, was acquitted by a High Court judge and jury.
“The matter was concluded before the Honourable Madam Justice Fidela Corbin-Lincoln on the 11 March, 2026. The Jury returned a Unanimous Not Guilty Verdict,” Mr Jervis told Demerara Waves Online News.
The lawyer said his argument was that the allegation was a “total fabrication” against Mr George. “My defence was that the entire prosecution case was a fabrication against my client,” Mr Jervis said.
Then 35 years old, Mr George had been charged with the offence of rape that allegedly occurred on July 22, 2023, at Siriki Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo Coast, and committed on a female from the Essequibo Coast.
During the course of the preliminary inquiry and the High Court trial, Mr George had been on GY$300,000 bail.
