A 22-year-old man and his four-month-old son died and a 19-year-old woman was seriously injured on Friday when the motorcycle they were travelling on collided with a TOPCO truck on Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, authorities said.
Krishna Persaud and his baby Luke Persaud were from Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
Police said the mother was admitted to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital where she regained consciousness and was in stable condition.
Investigators said that at about 11 a.m., a speeding motorcycle, CM 5492, ridden by Persaud overtook a stationary motor lorry on the solid double yellow lines, and collided with the front right-side of the lorry, GZZ 5068, on the opposite lane. The lorry was being driven by a 27-year-old man of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara.
Police said the lorry was proceeding north out of a parking lot of a shopping mall, situated on the southern parapet, when another motor lorry proceeding west along the southern side of the said road stopped and allowed the driver of the other motor lorry to turn and proceed east.
In the process of doing so, police said the motorcycle, which was proceeding west along the southern side struck GZZ 5068, collided with the lorry resulting in the motorcyclist and pillion riders falling onto the road surface and sustaining injuries about their bodies, police said.
Police said the driver of the motor lorry was in police custody assisting with investigations, adding that a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the motor lorry and no trace of alcohol was detected.
Meanwhile, Tropical Orchard Products Company Limited (TOPCO), in confirming that one of its vehicles was involved in a serious road accident at Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, said it was cooperating fully with the Guyana Police Force and the relevant authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
“We are deeply saddened to learn that the incident has resulted in the tragic loss of life, including that of a father and a child. We also understand that the mother is in critical condition,” TOPCO said.
TOPCO extended condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the devastating tragedy.
The company said out of respect for the grieving family and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, it would not comment further until more information becomes available.
