A 9mm pistol and 11 matching rounds were found under a desk in a primary school in Georgetown and investigators have since obtained statements from a number of persons, the Guyana Police Force said on Thursday.
Head of the force’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Police Commissioner Wendell Blanhum said the gun was licensed and even the student was aiding in his search for the weapon.
“He told investigators that his licensed firearm was missing and several family members including the student were assisting him in an effort to locate the weapon,” Mr Blanhum told Demerara Waves Online News.
The police force statement was issued three days after the handgun as found at about 1:06 p.m. on Monday.
“Preliminary enquiries revealed that a teacher was in her classroom when a report was made to her about a suspicious sound heard in the vicinity of a student’s desk. Checks were subsequently conducted, during which a firearm was discovered under the desk,” police said in a statement.
Investigators said they later visited the school and took possession of the handgun and ammunition, taken to a police station and lodged pending further investigation.
