Stabroek Market, the largest public market in the English-speaking Caribbean, would either be restored or rebuilt from this year as part of a GY$2 billion facelift for Georgetown, local government minister Priya Manickchand said Thursday.
She told the National Assembly’s Committee of Supply that the options include restoration, construction or rebuilding the Stabroek Market as well as Bourda Green.
“Stabroek Market is iconic to Georgetown and to Guyana so it’s not just a pull-down-and-build project but this money is allocated to doing those two areas, particularly,” she told the committee that is considering the GY$1.558 trillion national budget for 2026.
With 60 percent of repairs to the Stabroek Market roof already completed through a GY$107.7 million contract that was awarded last October, Ms Manickchand said GY$74 million would be spent on the remaining repairs pending the commencement of the major works.
She said markets should now have minimum standards such as good sanitation and sanitary facilities, excellent weather protection, organised stalls and vending spaces.
Meanwhile, government plans to spend GY$30 million on rehabilitation of the then residence of late national poet, Martin Carter, on Lamaha Street, Queenstown after consultation with the owner.
Funds have also been allocated for the design and construction of green spaces in the four Ruimveldts in southern Georgetown.
