The Canada-headquartered G Mining Ventures (GMIN) on Monday refused to comment about an alleged criminal incident that occurred at its Oko West concession where a large-scale gold mine is being developed.
A company spokeswoman offered “no comments at this time from us” when contacted about the incident that reportedly occurred on January 29.
The Guyana Police Force did not immediately respond to media queries, but law enforcement sources said there was a shooting incident at Oko West but no one was robbed. No one has been arrested so far, according to the sources.
Other unconfirmed accounts indicated that armed men shot at the generator, plunging the location into darkness before robbing several workers of valuables.
Relevant stakeholders in the mining sector were not immediately aware of the incident.
GMIN is investing US$1.5 billion in constructing a mine at Oko West to produce about 400,000 ounces of gold annually.
