The driver of the motor lorry that rolled back down the west-bound carriageway of the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, resulting in death, injury and damage was not licenced to drive that type of vehicle, the Guyana Police Force said on Friday.
“Further investigations have revealed that the driver of the motor lorry involved was unable to produce documents for the vehicle and his driver’s licence does not carry the category required to operate a motor lorry,” police said in a statement.
The accident occurred on Thursday on the southern carriageway of the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, East Bank Demerara, which resulted in the death of Scott Dorwart, 24, of Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The occupant of the car that Dorwart was driving was hospitalised for treatment to injuries.
Police said the driver and owner of the motor lorry remain in police custody as investigations continue.
According to police, there was a mechanical failure of the cement-laden lorry that resulted in the accident involving five other vehicles, including a motorcycle.
