Businessman granted bail on gun, ammo possession charges

The cellular phone store owner, who was charged with illegal possession of an AK-47 assault rifle, matching ammunition and a pistol, was on Wednesday granted GY$500,000 bail.

Amar Avinash Persaud was arrested on Sherriff Street, Georgetown on December 21, 2025 by agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

Head of CANU, James Singh said the 37-year-old man, who lives at Bladenhall North, East Coast Demerara, was handed over to police.

CANU said Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty placed the accused on bail.
