Agriculture minister Zulfikar Mustapha had denied claims by leader of Guyana’s main opposition We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), Azruddin Mohamed that his house was likely constructed with proceeds from corruption.
“I hereby declare that the construction of the said house at Bloomfield, Berbice, was funded and financed exclusively through a mortgage obtained from Demerara Bank Limited and personal savings accumulated through lawful employment,” Mr Mustapha said in a statement.
He added that he was up to date with his declarations with the Integrity Commission. “I wish to assure my supporters and the general public that all my assets were acquired through lawful means. I can account for every asset I own,” he said.
The WIN party leader said four years ago Mr Mohamed’s house at Bloomfield, Berbice was a “simple, wooden” structure similar to his neighbours.
He questioned how a minister earning less than GY$1.2 million dollars monthly could afford to rebuild his home with custom features and luxury finishing.
Mr Mohamed said the street where the agriculture minister’s house is located is the “only” street that has been widened and custom-built while the others remain narrow and under-developed.
“These are the privileges afforded to the PPP cabal at the expense of ordinary Guyanese,” said Mr Mohamed who is fighting an extradition request by the United States to face trial for wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering.
Mr Mohamed flayed the president for not ensuring that the other streets in the neighbourhood were fixed before the minister’s.

But the agriculture minister sought to assure Guyanese that he has lived a life dedicated to serving the people of Guyana over the 35-year-long political career during which he has served as a member of parliament, Regional Chairman for Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne) for five years and a government minister from 2020 to present.
The minister also defended his son, Javed Mustapha’s reputation against Mr Mohamed’s suggestion on Team Mohamed’s page on December 14, 2025, that he was also corrupt.
“I have invested in my son’s education, and his entrepreneurial path has been nothing short of maintaining a high standard of accountability, transparency, integrity, and professionalism,” the minister also said.
Mr Mustapha said Mr Mohamed has embarked on a “personal vendetta” against his son after the latter distanced himself from him because of alleged unlawful and unethical conduct.
While the government minister said he and his son would not engage in a “tit-for-tat” with Mr Mohamed, he has asked his lawyers to explore filing a defamation lawsuit “to protect myself and my family from further malicious and erroneous publications.”
Mr Mustapha said Mr Mohamed’s assertions made in the video were completely untrue, fallacious, and devoid of merit, and could only have been contrived to harm his reputation, expose him to hatred, contempt, ridicule and damage his image as a Minister of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) administration.
In the carefully worded statement, Mr Mohamed said, “under the PPP government, being in public office appears to allow (for) the rapid accumulation of immense wealth through corrupt means. The evidence is there for all Guyanese to see,” he said.
The WIN leader hoped that the US, British and Canadian authorities were taking note of how public office under the PPP could be used for personal enrichment at the expense of the people.
