Home affairs minister Oneidge Walrond on Wednesday ordered members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to remove unauthorised tint from their privately-owned motor vehicles.
“Any rank who has tint on their private motor vehicle that does not comply with the regulations, and who does not possess a valid tint permit, must remove the tint immediately,” she said in a Facebook post.
The minister also said no tint is to be reinstalled unless an approved tint permit has been formally applied for and granted.
She warned police “ranks” that failure to comply will result in disciplinary action, without exception.
“Let it be clearly understood that the law applies to everyone equally. Those empowered to enforce the law must be the first to uphold it,” she said.
Minister Walrond made no mention of police force members whose privately-owned vehicles bear number plates that are not written in the recommended format.
Presidential and prime ministerial guards are among members of the GPF who drive privately-owned vehicles that are heavily tinted and bear licence plates written in unauthorised formats.
In Guyana, vehicle licence number plates are made by private persons, a number of whom operate on street corners. This contrasts with, for instance, Antigua and Barbuda whose Transport Board issues the licence plates for both government and privately-owned vehicles including buses.
