U.S. SOUTHCOM commander on Guyana visit

Last Updated on Thursday, 6 November 2025, 20:19 by Writer

U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot greets Commander of United States (U.S.) Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Admiral Alvin Holsey on his arrival at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Commander of the United States (U.S.) Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Admiral Alvin Holsey arrived in Guyana to meet with senior government and defense leaders to further strengthen the two countries’ security partnership, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

During his visit to Georgetown, Admiral Holsey will conduct key engagements, including meeting with Prime Minister Mark Phillips, curently performing the functions of President, and Guyana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan.

“The discussions will focus on accelerating security cooperation, ensuring regional stability, and reaffirming the U.S.’ steadfast support for Guyana’s territorial integrity,” the U.S. Embassy said.

Demerara Waves Online News was told that the focus was on seeing how the U.S. could further help Guyana with training, equipment procurement and capacity building.

The American diplomatic mission said the defence partnership between the U.S. and Guyana is long-standing and encompasses joint efforts to counter transnational threats, build capacity, and engage in bilateral training programs and professional development.

U.S. Southern Command works closely with U.S. Government agencies and multinational partners to advance security and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean — partnerships that are essential to hemispheric security, prosperity, and the collective ability to address complex security challenges.
