The car that was destroyed in the bomb blast

Investigators have retrieved pictures of an explosive device from the mobile phone of the confessed gas station bomber, Deputy Police Commissioner Wendell Blanhum said on Friday.

He told Demerara Waves Online News that experts were examining the images. “The explosive experts are currently examining the images from the device,” he said.

Police have so far declined to say what the explosive device was made of and what was the motive of the bomb attack.

Police said Venezuelan Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo had admitted to detonating the device on October 26, 2024 at about 7:24 p.m. at the Mobil gas station on Regent and King streets, Georgetown. One person was killed and four others seriously injured.

Mr Blanhum said police also obtained an extension of the detention period beyond 72 hours for a ninth person.

Previously, police had obtained an extension for the eight others including several Guyanese and Venezuelans.

Investigators have also learned that Mr Ramirez Peodomo and a Venezuelan accomplice landed by boat at a koker at Parika at about 8 a.m. on the same day of the incident. They and others allegedly travelled to the gas station where they conducted surveillance.

Police said Mr Ramirez Peodomo attempted to place a bulky plastic bag in a garbage bin next to a fuel pump but the pump attendant who was sitting nearby told him not to do so.

Video surveillance footage shows the man placing the bag next to a parked car in the vicinity of the storage area for cooking gas cylinders.

The Mobil gas station’s mini-mart was badly damaged and the glass windows of several nearby buildings were shattered. The blast was heard and felt at least two kilometres away.

Last Sunday’s explosion was the third so far for the year. Two others occurred almost simultaneously in May at the Ruimveldt Police Outpost and the Guyana Power and Light’s substation on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
