Three days before he was expected to be elected in the National Assembly as Guyana’s next opposition leader, the leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), Azruddin Mohamed was arrested on Friday in response to an extradition request by the United States on fraud and money laundering.
Home Affairs minister Oneidge Walrond confirmed to Demerara Waves Online News that the WIN leader and his father, Nazar “Shell” Mohamed, have been arrested.
The Guyana Police Force remained mum on the arrest, although its Head of Special Branch Prem Narine was one of the arresting officers.
Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Aubrey Norton said he hoped that the legal processes would be followed.
The Mohameds were indicted by a United States grand jury on 11 charges.
