The Guyana government’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has bought espionage equipment ranging from eye glasses to watches that can conduct video recordings.
Among the list of items are 32 earbuds with hidden cameras, 33 wristwatches with hidden cameras, 35 high definition camera glasses with video recorders, seven polygraph (lie detector) machines and eight drone jammers.
The NISA also purchased six geolocation finders.
The Guyana government’s use of technology to track down dangerous criminals dates back to 2002 when sophisticated triangulation equipment was found in possession of then drug lord, Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan.
Evidence led in a United States court had included a letter from a then government minister that had authorised the purchase of the equipment, sold only to governments.
The equipment had been used primarily to locate members of heavily armed gangs during the violent crime wave by interfacing with the mobile phone system.
