Three persons have been arrested in connection with the explosion at the Mobil gas station but the prime suspect still remains at large, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said Monday night.
“Information obtained from these arrests has provided key leads to investigators. The principal suspect, who remains at large, is being actively sought as the investigation continues,” the police force said.
No name has been provided, but an image disseminated by the law enforcement agency said the man, who is wanted for terrorism, speaks Spanish.
A six-year-old girl, who was in a car in the Mobil gas station compound on Regent and King streets, Georgetown, was killed when the contents of a bulky black plastic bag exploded near the vehicle in which she and others were occupants. Four others were injured.
The explosion that rocked several parts of the capital city occurred at about 7:24 p.m.
According to closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance video, the man was seen entering the gas station and attempting to place the bulky bag in a waste disposal bin next to a fuel pump, but an attendant who was seated there told him not to do so.
The video recording shows him leaving the gas station through the western entrance but not before placing the bag next to the car. As the car was reversing slowly, the device in the bag exploded and rocked the car.
Saying that investigators have made “significant progress”, the police force related in a press statement that among those arrested is a Venezuelan man and they all were assisting with the investigation.
The police force said that earlier Monday, acting on intelligence and CCTV analysis, investigators conducted a coordinated operation that led to the interception of a silver motor car (PSS 7874) which was used to transport one of the suspects. The vehicle was subsequently located and the three individuals were arrested and are in custody.
The GPF urges anyone who may have seen or interacted with the individual or who may have information on his whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or call 911 immediately.
Experts from the Guyana Forensic Science Laboratory have collected samples, including plastic and metal fragments which are being analysed to determine their origin and evidential value, police added.
The GPF said investigators continue to assess the scene of the explosion. Damage was observed to the Mobil minimart, storage bond, and four fuel pumps, as well as to several nearby buildings – including the KFC outlet, adjoining commercial establishments and portions of the High Court – consistent with shockwave impact from the blast.
The GPF reiterated that it remains resolute and diligent in advancing this investigation. “Every effort is being made to bring those responsible to justice and to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens.”
The GPF has not held a press conference on any serious crime for more than three years now.
Two similar high intensity explosions occurred simultaneously in May, 2025, ripping out a door of the Ruimveldt Police Outpost and damaging the concrete base of a utility pole in a Guyana Power and Light substation on Mandela Avenue.
Two Spanish-speaking men were also identified as the perpetrators but none of them was arrested.
