Some Region Nine residents told to register again for cash grant

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said cash grants would continue to be disbursed to each Guyanese 18 years and older, amid claims by sections of the public that monies would be distributed to each household.

“It’s a blatant lie! We never made any such decision,” he told a news conference.

He also indicated strongly that his government would be keeping its pre-election promise that there would be a cash grant disbursement to Guyanese before Christmas. “Whatever the President said will be delivered,” said Mr Jagdeo who is also the ruling People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) General Secretary.

President Irfaan Ali, at a general election campaign meeting held in Eccles in August, 2025, had signaled that Guyanese would be receiving a cash grant in time for Christmas. “I heard PM (Prime Minister) told them next year is the next grant. If you behave yourself, you get it this year,” he had said on August 26.

Mr Jagdeo said on Thursday that the model for Guyana’s development is not a cash grant model, but “every commitment we made in relation to the cash grant we will keep; we’ve not withdrawn any commitment.” “There will be several cash grants in the five years,” he added.

Mr Jagdeo, meanwhile, scoffed at an apparent misrepresentation of Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat’s position on cash grants. He said his government was focussing on delivering high quality education, reduced taxation, home ownership, cash transfers, increased pensions, students’ grant, public assistance, disability assistance, more recreational facilities and increased security.
