Representative of the List of Candidates for the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton on Friday announced the names of his party’s 12 members of parliament (MPs) following the September 1 general and regional elections.
Mr Norton said he would not be returning to the National Assembly, but would remain leader to help “continue the rebuilding of the property.” Asked whether he would be contesting for the position of leader at the next PNCR internal elections, Mr Norton said “the PNC will determine what will happens at the next Congress.”
At the same time, he ruled out leading the PNCR-led APNU into the next elections. “I will preside over the party and ensure that I put the mechanisms in place so that by the time we arrive at the next elections, we are well-structured, we will be ready and the new blood in the party will take over the party. I hope that is an indication that I have no intention of running for the presidency in the future,” he said. Looking ahead, he said APNU would need a “war chest” – a lot of money – to contest future elections.
He declined to say why APNU decided to pick city businessman Terrence Campbell to lead the party’s team in parliament. “I don’t have to tell anyone why we arrived at a decision. I don’t have to give any explanation as to why,” he said.
The APNU slate of MPs are:
- Mr. Saiku Andrews
- Dr. Terrence Campbell
- Mr. Sherod Duncan
- Ms. Juretha Fernandes
- Ms. Nima Flue-Bess
- Dr. David Hinds
- Mr. Vinceroy Jordan
- Mr. Ganesh Mahipaul
- Mr. Coretta McDonald
- Mr. Reiaz Rupnarine
- Mr. Sharma Solomon
- Mr. Dexter Todd
Asked why none of the smaller parties, apart from Dr Hinds’ Working People’s Alliance, that made up the APNU coalition was represented among the 12 MPs. “We had to make a decision, not only on parties but on a group that can represent all of us and when I looked at it and engaged with people, we thought that this was the best representation,” he said.
He said the regional representatives have already been “signed off” and sent to the relevant authorities.
The PNCR leader and APNU Chairman, ahead of an “urgent” review of its electoral performance, pointed to a trend dating back to the 1950s under Forbes Burnham with the emergence of the United Force (UF), 2006 under Robert Corbin with the establishment of the Alliance For Change (AFC) and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) in 2025.
“It is probably signalling that our support may be more welcoming of new persons,” he said. “It is something we will have to analyse and move forward,” he said.
