Port Kaituma businessman remanded on cocaine possession charge – police

A Port Kaituma gold miner, who was allegedly caught at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport with 26.7 kilos of cocaine that was flown on a domestic aircraft to the coast, has been refused bail and remanded to custody, police said Monday.

Junior Anthony Greaves, 44, of Kitty, Georgetown and Port Kaituma Water Front in Region One, was arrested on August 24, 2o25 and charged on August 26 with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Police said he appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs, where the charge was read to him. Mr Greaves reportedly pleaded not guilty, bail was refused and he was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to 19th September 2025 for disclosure.

Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) customs officers, agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Police Force were involved in arresting Mr Greaves after he allegedly refused to have his baggage searched at the airport.

The officer-in-charge for customs at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport reportedly shouted “Sir, Sir,” but Mr. Greaves allegedly ignored him and kept walking. “The interception of Junior Anthony Greaves resulted in the seizure of eleven (11) brick-like parcels containing a whitish powdery substance, suspected to be cocaine. The matter was formally transferred to the Police Narcotics Branch for continuation,” the official had said then. Authorities also seized GY$743,000 and one cell phone.
