The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) late on Saturday night certified the results of the September 1 general and regional elections, showing the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) winning 36 seats.
This means that the PPPC’s presidential candidate Dr Irfaan Ali has been declared President of Guyana with 242,497 votes.
Coming in second is We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) with 16 seats from 109,075 votes.
The declaration also shows that 77,988 persons voted for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), electing 12 persons to the National Assembly.
Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has garnered 4,332 votes to give that party one seat.
Incumbent Dr Ali will be sworn in for a second term on Sunday morning at State House.
The Representatives of the Lists of candidates for each party will in the coming days extract names of elected persons to become parliamentarians. For his part, Dr Ali will appoint a number of ministers and members of his Cabinet.
Ruling PPPC Election Commissioner Sase Gunraj told reporters that the Chief Elections Officer Vishnu Persaud’s report containing the results was put to a vote but the three political opposition-nominated commissioners — Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Desmond Trotman — abstained.
Mr Alexander later told reporters that GECOM Chairman Claudette Singh appeared not to have known that she needed to also declare the seats won instead of just sharing the spreadsheets.
He also said the Chairman did not issue a written declaration of Dr Ali as President but did so orally at the meeting.
