Former national cyclist Alanzo Greaves lost his life in a motorcycle incident on Wednesday night on Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens. the Guyana Police Force said Thursday.

Greaves, age 36, of Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was at the time riding a red, white and black Ducati motorcycle (registration number CH 5222).

Police said that about 11:30 pm, the motorcyclist was proceeding south along the eastern side of Mandela Avenue at a fast rate, without wearing his safety helmet. “While in the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens, he lost control of his motorcycle causing it to veer in a south-easternly direction where the front wheel came into contact with a heap of mud that was on the extreme eastern edge of the road beyond the continuous white line. Greaves sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body,” police added.

Emergency medical technicians were summoned to the accident scene and arrived shortly after. The injured motorcyclist was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead at the accident scene.

Meanwhile, President Irfaan Ali said, “I am saddened to learn of the passing of former national cyclist Alanzo Greaves, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident this evening. The cycling fraternity has lost an outstanding sportsman who represented Guyana well.

To his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones, we pray that God grant you the strength and courage during this difficult time. You will remain in our prayers.”
