Norton votes in Guyana’s general elections

Last Updated on Monday, 1 September 2025, 8:05 by Writer

Voting at Plaisance Secondary School

Polls opened at 6 am on Monday and among those voting first was presidential candidate for the main opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Aubrey Norton.

Mr Aubrey Norton displaying his inked index finger as proof that he voted.

He cast his ballot at the Plaisance Secondary School, ‘Catholic School Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.

Shortly after doing so, he reiterated the need to redistribute oil wealth. Mr Norton said he observed a number of balloting compartments at polling stations there improperly located which would not permit polling day staff to see if voters are using a cellphone or other device to capture how they voted to possibly ‘sell’ their vote.

Monday’s general and regional elections appears to be a three-horse race among APNU, incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic and newcomer We Invest in Nationhood (WIN).

Ahead of Monday’s elections, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission. (GECOM), Retired Justice Claudette Singh issued a statement assuring voters that every effort has been made to ensure free and fair elections. “Please be assured that all systems are in place for the efficient and transparent conduct of the elections,” said Ms Singh who has so far stayed away from GECOM’s media conferences.”

The voters list, which the opposition says is bloated with the names of migrants and deceased persons, contains 757,690 names. There are 2,790 polling stations across the country.

Ms Singh also appealed to all stakeholders to embrace the urgent need for peace and calm throughout the electoral process.

She said elections are regarded as the cornerstone of our democracy, a time for the expression of the people’s will, and this expression must occur in an atmosphere free from intimidation, misinformation, and unrest.
