The Alliance For Change (AFC) on Saturday said if its wins the September 1, 2025 general and regional elections, it would establish a broad-based group of experts to find ways of lowering the cost of food.
Party prime ministerial candidate, Laura George told a public meeting on West Front Road that a food security task force would also include ordinary Guyanese who would be allowed to share their ideas about how to reduce food prices. “It would be a mixture, a combination of people who have the technical expertise but also people from the communities that have the lived experiences and who can also give guidance and expertise to those who are coming with the technical expertise,” she said.
For their part, the People’s National Congress Reform-led A Partnership for National Unity and the ruling People’s Progressive Party had separately said one of the ways to address spiralling prices is to increase food production. APNU’s plan includes making each of the 10 administrative regions food self-sufficient.
The New Guyana Marketing Corporation’s records show that the cost of fruits and vegetables had increased by 75 percent from May 2021 to May 2025.
Ms George said the rising cost of living was affecting family relations because parents were busy earning to barely grapple with the cost of living.
