PPPC presidential candidate Dr Irfaan Ali addressing an election campaign meeting at Industry, East Coast Demerara.

The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) on Friday set its eyes on snatching the opposition stronghold of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) in next month’s general elections.

PPPC presidential candidate Irfaan Ali issued a charge to party faithful at a public meeting held in the traditional stronghold of Industry, East Coast Demerara. “With that, we will create history by winning Region Four,” he told a large turnout.

With Region Four being a large traditional stronghold of the People’s National Congress Reform-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Dr Ali said if the PPP secures victory there, it would symbolise racial unity. “This is the prize we want badly. This is the prize of unity. This is the prize that would send a message that no longer are we divided. You must come out in your numbers and deliver Region Four to the People’s Progressive Party Civic,” he said.

In the 2020 elections, the PPP won 81,279 votes and APNU+Alliance For Change 116,403 votes of the 201,575 valid votes cast.

There are 35 seats in the Region Four Council.
