Businessman turned politician, Azruddin Mohamed, said police went to one of his properties at Providence, East Bank Demerara late Wednesday night, saying they wanted to arrest him but he was uncertain why he was wanted.
Senior police officers did not immediately respond to queries.
He claimed he was reliably informed that he was wanted for alleged obstruction of justice in connection with one of his supporters, Bradley “Doggy” Sampson. Mr Sampson is wanted for alleged assault, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, threatening behaviour, threatening language, obscene language, and disorderly behaviour.
The Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party told Demerara Waves Online News that the police did not turn up at his Houston, East Bank Demerara residence.
On his Team Mohamed’s Facebook page, a post accompanied by video of police in a compound states: “This is what kind of democracy, 3 van load of officers armed with rifles forced themselves into a private property to arrest Mr Mohamed at 11:30 pm. These officers are sick and tired of taking instructions from politicians.”
Former APNU+AFC government minister Tabita Sarabo-Halley, who recently endorsed WIN, was seen on the scene in the video. A man was heard saying that the lawmen went to arrest Mr Mohamed and asking police for a warrant. “They are on private property and they do not have a warrant,” the man said. They said the police subsequently exited the premises and went outside.
A woman was heard saying that “this is political persecution” and that the video would be sent to the Carter Center and the Commonwealth that would be observing the September 1, 2025 general and regional elections.
