Two persons were killed and six others were injured late on Tuesday night in what police believed stemmed from a disagreement between one of the injured persons and a gang identified as “Team Diamond”, police said.
“Several persons were questioned and certain information was received in that one of the injured persons has an ongoing problem with a gang referred to as ‘Team Diamond’. That injured person is currently under police guard,” the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement.
Based on additional information received, a silver-coloured motorcar bearing a certain registered number was seen circling the area. “This was the car that the suspects reportedly used to carry out the attack, after which they rejoined the car and made good their escape,” police added.
The GPF issued a statement at 7:46 on Wednesday morning about the incident that occurred at 11:47 on Tuesday, identifying the dead persons as 17-year-old Leon McFarlane of 71 Middle Walk, Buxton, and businessman Mark Anthony Correia, 38, of 75 Republic Drive, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
Investigators so far do not know who shot and injured the persons on Middle Walk, Buxton over the Railway Embankment Road but they were told that it stemmed from a disagreement with a gang.
Police are also treating the injuries to the six other persons as “attempted murders”. Those injured are 60-year-old Linden Adams of Side Line Dam, Buxton; 54-year-old Alwin Fiffee of Middle Walk, Buxton; 26-year-old Davel Talbot,a Special Constable of Middle Walk, Buxton; 18-year-old Akeem Tuman of Middle Walk, Buxton; 35-year-old Sherwin Nero of Friendship, East Coast Demerara, and a 17-year-old male from Middle Walk, Buxton. They were all admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Investigators were told that the dead persons – McFarlane and Correia – were at a shop owned by 41-year-old Asha Robinson of 69 Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, playing cards and dominoes. She reportedly retired to bed at about 11 p.m. leaving them in the the shop.
Ms Robinson, according to police, said that at 11:47 p.m., she heard several loud explosions sounding like gunshots, and she went outside where she saw Correia in a slumped position at the table with what appears to be blood oozing out from his mouth, nose and back. She reportedly said she raised an alarm and public-spirited persons responded and assisted in taking the other injured males to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Leon McFarlane was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body of McFarlane was examined, and suspected gunshot wounds were seen on the right hand, chest, face, forearm, and right foot, police said. The body was escorted to the GPHC’s Mortuary for storage and post-mortem examination.
Correia was subsequently escorted to the Enmore Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was examined, and suspected gunshot injuries were seen on his back, left ear, left shoulder, chest, right palm, left jaw and above the right eye. The body was later escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for storage and post-mortem examination, police said.
Police said investigators recovered 40 spent shells, comprising one .40, twenty-nine 5.56×45, and ten 7.62×39 from the scene. Four projectiles and two fragments were found on the ground in the shop. These were photographed, packaged and lodged, police added.
