Azruddin Mohamed says party symbol is a leopard, not a jaguar; threatens legal action against GECOM

WIN's symbol that was submitted.

WIN’s symbol that was submitted.

The controversial symbol of the Azruddin Mohamed-led We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party has been approved by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), an election commissioner said on Tuesday.

People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC)-nominated Election Commissioner Attorney-at-Law Sase Gunraj told Demerara Waves Online News that the symbol was among more than 20 that were approved by GECOM on Tuesday.

Asked why GECOM changed its mind from that of rejecting the symbol on the grounds that it is jaguar and offends Guyana’s Constitution because it is part of the Coat of Arms, Mr Gunraj said the decision was taken to accept the WIN symbol because that party said it is a leopard.

Mr Mohamed, himself, at a public meeting in the North West District had said that the symbol is a jaguar.

Overall, the GECOM Commissioner said, “all symbols submitted have been approved. Some have been approved on the condition that minor changes be made.”
