Woman, boyfriend charged with murder of her mother

Saffia Mohamed                                                                      Austin Ramchand

A 23-year-old woman and her 24-year-old boyfriend of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara were Tuesday charged with the murder of the woman’s mother whose body was dumped in a trench several miles away, police said.

Those charged with the murder of 48-year-old Jenny Mohamed were auto electrician Austin Ramchand and his girlfriend Saffia Mohamed.

The accused were not required to plea to the indictable charge and were remanded to prison until August 4, 2025 when they would return to the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court.

Police said the duo, who reside at 304 Mon Repos, stabbed the woman multiple times, placed her body in a large black garbage bag and wrapped it and dumped in a trench off the new Eccles Highway near the intersection that leads back to Ogle, East Coast Demerara.

Initially, the woman’s disappearance had been treated as a missing person. However, police found human blood at her home at 368 Section ‘D’, Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara. Police said the duo led them to the area where Mohamed’s body was dumped.

Police said they confessed to killing the woman because she was abusive to them. “On June 19, 2025, while in custody, the deceased woman’s daughter, under further questioning, confessed that she and her common-law husband murdered the deceased on June 10th, 2025 and gave a detailed description of the killing, by stabbing and strangling Jenny with a rope.

Subsequent interviews and confrontations were held with the son-in-law and husband, where the son-in-law subsequently admitted and confirmed his role in the murder and disposal of the body, police added.
