Jamaica’s Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Aubyn Hill has said there is scope for his country’s logistics hub to be integrated with Guyana’s deepwater port and container terminal when they come on stream.
He told the opening of the just-concluded 4th Business Ministerial Mission to Guyana under the auspices of his ministry and the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) that logistics as a core opportunity to build a partnership between the two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states. “We need to look at logistics as a place to make sure we build that partnership so that when Guyana gets its huge port, [we] are a little partner in there already,” he said.
Cranes Guyana Inc. – a consortium of John Fernandes Limited and Muneshwer’s Limited – are seeking financing for the construction of the deepwater port in Berbice. At the same time, the Guyana government is exploring other opportunities for financing in what could emerge as a major public-private partnership project with links to the proposed Linden-Lethem road and a parallel railway.
The delegation included 23 companies across multiple sectors that explored business opportunities in Guyana. Among them was the decades-old food Jamaican manufacturing company, Grace. Expressing satisfaction that the Grace brand is well-known in Guyana, the representative said her company has six factories and was interested in agro-processing and co-manufacturing.
President of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) Rafeek Khan said one of the opportunities could be co-branding of Guyanese products to supply oil production and exploration vessels that are located offshore.
Other participants from Jamaica said they were interested in supplying educational materials and manufacture drones for Guyana’s agriculture sector.
