A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier on Thursday went missing after he reportedly fell into the Cuyuni River in the vicinity of Makapa Rapids, the defence force said.
He has been identified as Lance Corporal Stefon Tudor. “The Guyana Defence Force will spare no resources to continue its efforts and has since communicated with the family of Lance Corporal Tudor.” Those involved in the search are troops stationed at Eteringbang and Makapa on the border.
The GDF said he was part of a riverain patrol in the river that borders that area of Guyana from Venezuela.
Reportedly, Lance Corporal Tudor fell into the river in the vicinity of the Makapa rapids between 1400 (2 p.m.) and 1500 hours (3 p.m.) today, the GDF added.
The GDF says it remains committed to the operational safety of all its officers and ranks.
A Board of Inquiry has been convened to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, the force said.
