Attorney-at-Law Siand Dhurjon on Sunday denied that he was ever detained or questioned by United States (US) authorities on arrival at the John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Mr Dhurjon refuted claims by a named Facebook page that he was pulled in and interrogated in connection with ongoing investigations involving his client, Azruddin Mohamed.
“I wish to categorically state that this post is a lie by that Facebook misinformation page,” he said in a statement.
“At no time was I questioned by the US Authorities about Mr. Mohamed or any other individual at all, at any point in time,” Mr Dhurjon said.
Mr Dhurjon threatened to file a defamation lawsuit against those responsible for the offending post on Facebook if it was not removed in 15 minutes. He said that post was “damaging to my upstanding reputation.” “This threat, like any threat made by me, is pursuant to my duty to set the record straight and to vindicate my lawful position,” he added.
The objectionable post was published on May 25 at 1:08 p.m. and the lawyer’s call for a removal was published on the same day at 2:54 p.m. but the original post was not deleted.
The Attorney-at-Law, who is representing Mr Mohamed in criminal and civil cases concerning the alleged false declaration of the value of a Lamborghini car and the accompanying non-payment of the duties and taxes, signaled that he suspected that two detectives and security personnel at the Cheddie Jagan International Airport and other persons at the airport leaked information about his travel itinerary.
He said he now recognised the true purpose of that heightened scrutiny on himself and his family by officers at the airport.
“Further, particularly excessive and extensive checks were made on me and my family by security personnel who searched the persons of myself, my wife and my three minor children – including my seven-month old baby – much to my annoyance. After this, unknown individuals working at the airport unnecessarily checked our passports a fourth time,” he said.
Mr Dhurjon said he visits the United States frequently.
He said on arrival this time for vacation, his five-member family encountered particularly warm and helpful immigration officers who duly admitted him and his family to the country without incident, detention or questioning about third-parties whatsoever.
The lawyer said an attorney merely representing a sanctioned individual does not open himself up to sanctions or to detention and investigation.
“The US government is no fool. It is well aware of the fundamental right one has to counsel. Unless an attorney has engaged in activities beyond legal representation—such as participating in or facilitating alleged criminal activity— without more that attorney would not face U.S. sanctions or visa revocation.”
