The France-headquartered call centre, Teleperformance (TP), has scaled back its operations in Guyana, reduced staff to almost 300, and closed its location at Camp and Robb streets, multiple sources said Friday night.
At peak operations in Guyana, TP had employed more than 2,000 Guyanese.
One of the sources said the closure was due to TP losing several clients, so the company had no other alternative but to send home call service agents who had been assigned to those clients.
Several managerial, supervisory, and other categories of staff are among those on the breadline.
TP still operates in Guyana at its relatively new location on Middle and Thomas streets, Georgetown.
A number of staff members are upset that they are not being communicated to about the fate of the company, especially since there has been a loss of clients.
Last November, the company had announced its intention to downsize in France by cutting 600 jobs due to structural challenges for several years in an increasingly competitive environment.
