Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday ruled out government supporting moves by the City administration to revaluate properties in Georgetown.
“I’m making it clear that we will not approve any valuation in Georgetown or any other part of the country,” he told a news conference at Freedom House, Robb Street, the headquarters of his People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
His position followed an announcement by City Mayor, Alfred Mentore at this week’s statutory meeting that he would be formally asking Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh to facilitate a meeting with the Chief Valuation Officer to discuss valuation and revaluation of properties in Georgetown.
“This is part of a plot to create dissatisfaction and blame the government,” he said.
Mr Jagdeo also said the PPPC did not support the plan by City Hall to invite indebted ratepayers to go to meet with members of the Finance Committee to reach debt settlement agreements.
The residents of Georgetown must know that the PNC wants their rates and taxes increased.
He said a number of religious organisations received demand notices for “massive” amounts of monies. Saying it was “commendable” that the Mayor and City Council wanted to collect outstanding rates and taxes, he argued that it could not be done in a partisan manner.
