Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company (MODEC, Inc) on Thursday announced the launch of its inaugural Onshore Trainee Program, which the company said aims to equip Guyanese nationals with both technical and non-technical skills in the oil and gas sector.
The Onshore Trainee Program will involve eight university graduates in a comprehensive 20-month training regimen. The program is divided into two phases: the initial phase will begin in Brazil, followed by the final phase in Singapore. The trainees are expected to depart Guyana over the next few weeks. During their time in Brazil, trainees will participate in a structured development plan that includes workshops on technical and soft skills, hands-on job training, and offshore assignments. In Singapore, trainees will undergo at least five months of pre-operations training to gain a thorough understanding of various phases of the Uaru project.
The commencement of the trainee program follows the recruitment of the first cohort of university interns. This 18-month internship program, which began in December 2024, offered three additional Guyanese nationals opportunities within the supply chain, human resources, and compliance departments. The interns are going to receive ongoing mentorship throughout their tenure at MODEC, with potential for permanent employment upon successful completion of their internships.
The company says the launch of these programs signifies a significant milestone in MODEC’s commitment to developing local talent and expertise within Guyana’s oil and gas sector. MODEC says it remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that contribute to the professional and academic growth of Guyanese nationals.
MODEC has been a leading provider of floating offshore solutions for the oil and gas industry for more than 55 years. The company was founded in Japan and is present in over 15 countries. In its operations globally, MODEC delivered 54 floating units projects and has 3 units under construction, always working to value the local expertise, develop partnerships, transfer knowledge, and boost the country’s economy.
