Embattled Assistant Police Commissioner, Calvin Brutus was Wednesday fired by the Police Service Commission (PSC) on the recommendation of a tribunal that was established by the commission to investigate a number of allegations of misconduct.
“You are hereby notified that the Commission has determined that you should be and are hereby dismissed from the Guyana Police Force, effective, February 5, 2025,” the PSC Secretary Jaigobin Jaisingh told Mr Brutus in the letter that was copied to Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken. The PSC informed Mr Brutus that Mr Hicken was requested to “take all such actions as are necessary to facilitate your handover and return of all documents, equipment, and other assets belonging to the Guyana Police Force that are currently in your possession.”
Mr Brutus, who is facing more than 200 fraud charges, late Wednesday afternoon told Demerara Waves Online News that he did not receive the dismissal letter and he was also not informed informally. He had last month refused to attend the Tribunal hearings and challenged its constitutionality since he is before the Magistrates’ Court for the charges.
However, in the letter seen by Demerara Waves Online News dated February 5 and addressed to him at his Police Officers’ Mess Compound residence, he was dismissed for “offences against discipline, breaches of discipline and discreditable conduct” which he allegedly committed while performing duties of Deputy Commissioner of Police —Administration in the Guyana Police Force, during the period of August 2020 to July 2024.
The PSC Secretary informed Mr Brutus that the commission considered the Tribunal’s report and unanimously concluded that the inquiry established “your culpability” regarding the two charges.
The first is Conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline contrary to section 4(z) of the Police (Discipline) Act, Chapter 17:01.
The PSC said the particulars of the offence are that Mr Brutus on the 11th day of January, 2024, gave instructions for payment of goods procured by the Government of Guyana, for the Guyana Police Force (GPF), in the sum of GY$13,670,204.00), to be made from the GPF’s Welfare Fund in violation of Standing Order 36 of the GPF.
The second count is that during December 2023 he caused records at the Quartermaster Stores of the Guyana Police Force to be falsified, purporting to show goods in the value of GY$101,431,050.00 were delivered by Corwin Nicholson trading as 3D Construction to the GPF, knowing same to be false.
