Suspected wife killer arrested near Guyana-Suriname border

Last Updated on Thursday, 30 January 2025, 9:24 by Writer

A 52-year old man has been arrested in a cemetery in connection with the killing of his 34-year-old ex-reputed wife at Annandale, East Coast Demerara.

Police suggested that he attempted to commit suicide.

Dead is school cleaner Bibi Fazila Ally of 37 Grassfield, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

The suspect is carpenter, Bidraj ‘Boy’ Ganesh from Annandale Sand Reef.

Their eight-year old son alerted his aunt, 50-year-old Raywattie Ganesh that his father attacked his mother and fled in a taxi, police said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at approximately 12:15 pm.

Police said Mr Ganesh and Ally had been in a relationship for over eight years and shared an eight-year-old son, who lived with his mother.

Their relationship ended in December 2024 during the Christmas season when the suspect accused Ally of infidelity and threatened her life, investigators were also told.

The school, located about 100 feet from the man’s home, was a place she frequently visited during lunch breaks.

Prior to Wednesday’s tragic incident Ally went to work as usual.

At around midday Wednesday, teachers noticed her absence. At approximately 12:15 pm, the victim’s son alerted his aunt, a school cleaner, that his father had attacked his mother and left in a taxi. Ms Raywattie immediately alerted the teachers at the school and went to the Annandale Outpost and reported the matter.

Ally was pronounced dead and the body taken to a mortuary for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Police said that at about 3:05 pm on Wednesday, they went to Enterprise cemetery where the prime suspect, Mr Ganesh, was apprehended. “He told the police that he consumed a poisonous substance and showed the ranks a herbicide bottle which contained the substance suspected to be poison,” the Guyana Police Force said. He was rushed by the Emergency Medical team at Melanie Fire Station to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remains a patient under police guard.
