Two Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldiers have been denied their pre-trial liberty and remanded to prison after they pleaded not guilty to a charge of being in possession of 154 pounds of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, police said Tuesday.

Soldiers Clovis Sam, 31, of Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown and Adisa Higgins, 42, of Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden were arraigned at the Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court, East Bank Demerara.

The case has been adjourned until August 12.

Police said the duo was arrested at about 3:45 a.m. on on July 18, 2024, at Coverden, East Bank Demerara.

Police said the “joint intelligence operation” between Special Branch and Regional Division 4’B’ netted the 22 bags of marijuana in a GDF vehicle.
