Fire early Wednesday morning badly damaged a section of the guest house and senior staff club at the Albion Estate owned by the Guyana Sugar Corporation, Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said.
He said fire fighters from Guysuco’s Rose Hall and Albion estates and the Guyana’s Fire Service’s New Amsterdam station responded to a call  shortly after 5 PM and eventually brought the blaze under control.
“They combined their efforts and managed to contain the fire to the club-room area so the other wings including staff quarters were saved. It is a massive building and so we managed to save more than sixty percent of the building,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.
Fire fighters said no one was in the building at the time of the fire. They were  told that the facility was last used Tuesday night.
Police and fire fighters said it was too early to say what cause the fire. No one has been detained. The building, which is usually guarded, could have been accessed only by the public road.
