26 percent hike in private sector minimum wage

Workers in the private sector will from January next year get a more than 26 percent increase in their wages and salaries, government announced Wednesday.

The new minimum wage is now GYD$255 per hour, up from GYD$202.
Minister of Social Services, Volda Lawrence accepted a recommendation by the Tripartite Committee to hike the minimum wage from January 1, 2017.
The minimum daily rate is GYD$2,040, minimum weekly rate is GYD$10,200 and the minimum monthly rate is GYD$44,200.
The ministry restated that the normal hours of work are eight hours, five days per week and 40 hours per week.
The Social Services Ministry used the opportunity to remind employers that during thd Christmas season, employees may be required to work extraordinary long hours “and for that adequate rates of pay must apply.”
