Fire of unknown origin Friday- Christmas Day-damaged the Subs and Salads fast food outlet at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, reminiscent of a similar blaze at another branch in Georgetown more than one year ago.Residents said fire fighters rushed to the scene at about 11: 30 AM after nearby residents saw smoke billowing from the building.
One of the fire fighters, who responded from West Ruimveldt and Diamond Fire stations, was injured by broken glass while forcing entry to the building. He was treated and sent away.
The kitchen was badly damaged, but the building was saved. Neighbours said the business was closed at the time of the fire.
Back on June 15, 2014 fire also severely damaged the kitchen at the Subs and Salads branch that was located at the Shell Filling Station, Regent and King Streets.
The Subs and Salads franchise holder is Shareef Ahmad, the brother of New York-based Ed Ahmad who is awaiting sentencing for mortgage fraud in New York.
Ed Ahmad is a friend of Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.
