A woman perished early Sunday morning after a produce-laden truck plunged into the Demerara River while the driver reversed to pick up a bag of boulanger that fell off the vehicle.She is 22-year old Gangaday Persaud of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. She was a mother of one.
Her partner, known only as Ravi, has been taken into police custody.
Police Commander, Clifton Hicken said the couple was heading to Plaisance Market when the mishap occurred on the wet and slippery Demerara Harbour Bridge near the retractor span.
Bridge authorities said efforts would be made later Sunday morning to salvage the vehicle.
